The specific problem described in SuperUser was that the person tried both EaseUS Todo Backup and Macrium Reflect to clone a Windows installation on an HDD to an SSD. The machine itself was slow to the point of being unusable I thought the SSD might speed it up a bit. In my case, the hard disk drive (HDD) was a 500GB Western Digital serving as system and data drive in an old 32-bit desktop machine, and the solid state drive (SSD) with which I proposed to replace it was a 240GB PNY CS1311. The problem posed in that SuperUser discussion: Windows 10 fails to boot after HDD clone to SSD. A later post describes dd commands, run from a Linux live USB drive, that might also work. The first paragraphs (below) describe one solution that worked for me later paragraphs describe a retry with different hardware. I didn’t keep notes of the various suggestions I tried along the way I didn’t expect it to be as complicated as it was. This post is a relatively brief elaboration on a SuperUser discussion.
